I think it is not necessary to go far away in the past time. In the last 20 years many important things were changed and developed. When I begun to work I didn't use to write my doctor reports or results in computer. I needed only to dictate them. Now, I'm used to creating my lecture and tables in computer by myself. Earlier I also used to like writing letters to my friends. Now it is more intresting because I'm used to writing my mails per computer and receiving quicklier the answer. However, the other side of the spektrum is the battle with the spam. I wasn't used to spending so many time to delete the spam mails.
Because I used to take pictures and to like to see them, I enjoy the possibility to have a digital camera. I'm getting used to taking pictures so many how I like and to seeing them at the same day without waiting until the film is ful.
Besides, 20 years ago I didn't use to have a portable telephon in my house. But now, I'm used to having it at home. It is very comfortable to be able to phone from the different places of the house or during the cooking and not be woried about the wires. And what for a blessing (or a damnation) is the cell-phone! I almost don't know anybody who isn't becoming used to one. Already the small children are used to phoning per cell-phone.
I'm convinced that soon we will be getting used to doing much more interesting and more or less useful things. For example, we will be getting used to being able to stop our favorite TV-show during the phon call and start again to not miss any interesting scenes. Or, we will be getting used to seeing our favorite TV-show per cell phone everywhere. Anyway, beside the useless inventions are always one or more intersting and important things.
A long time ago, people were used to riding a horse, sending a letter by half month. People had getten used to handmade stuff. Because at that time, they have no car, no computer to send a mail. no machine to massproduce a stuff.
So,people were used to living in slower life. people didn't use to faster life.
But, now people are used living in faster life. Everybody have getten used to a car, a machine, an air pland, a mp3 player, a digital camera, a television, a fridge. Everybody is used to using computer to send a E-mail.
Now I have getten used to electrical stuff, I can't living without that every day.
A long time ago in Indonesia especially javanese culture. Women used to live at home and they didin't have freedome or social equal like man. They only took school basicly. A lot of javanese women are poor. They didin't have allow to go to school in high level, they just stay at home such as clean, cook, and go to bed. The culture was very strong and if some women want to get married they hadn't choose them self, that means the parrents introduced aboute a man to them and they migh be agree.Women couln't work in out side and if they want to get a job migh be work at the factory and they would get cheape money.
The situation was made depressed and stess especially for women although a lot of women didin't have high social statuse, but they have chose for their live. At the time Kartini want to help them go out frome's traboule situate, because so many discriminate for women. She was very concerned because of educatio in Indonesia especially for woman. Because of her concerns, she found a school only for women in Indonesia and because of her now women use to same equal with man. Now in Indonesia woman can work out side and have good job such as Scientist, Architect, Pilot, Activist etc. She always gives inspirate for women and she is figure emancipate women in Indonesia.
The things and issues have been changing during human being history. For example traveling used to be longer, tiring and maybe interesting. In Jane Eire Book, she would call the coachman, when she had wanted to travel and moved to another city. In that time people would have more time to read, think and contemplate better the surroundings of the landscapes. Or imagine i thought it is also remarkable traveling by boat or ship, sailors are used to enjoying and establishing as a way of live. Portuguese and english settlers and explores used to go on in a noteworthy places by shipping. Portuguese had revelead all the world for the europeans nations after Marco Polo. But with a huge diference, the Italian traveler used to know that earth was square and he wouldn't be acquainted with the new world(Americas). People used to grow their own food. We used to have more interaction with nature diferents kinds os knowledge. Maybe we have been changing our wisdom in most cases and not increasing. Of course we used to discriminate more people, and now in Canada for example, people have becoming used to absorbing and respecting persons from all the continents. The length to be travelled in that aspect is too ample. We aren't get used sharing time with the person who we love! A lot of people will be used to regreting before they die.
The Life of South Korea about 30~40years Ago
50 years ago from now, Korea was one of the poorest countries. We didn't have enough products such as cars, clothes, food ...etc. Many people used to take a train when they wanted to move to other cities. Also, there weren't many public buses in cities, people used to take electricity trains instead of buses.
At that time, most of children used to go to elementary schools, and only some children especially who were boys could go to middle school and high school, because of not only traditional culture of Korea, but also shortage of money. For example, my father's parents have six sons and two daughters. All of their sons graduated from high school and some sons graduated from university. Otherwise, their two daughters just graduated from elementary school. My father's parents though that women didn't need to get high education, even though they had enough money to send their two daughters to middle school. The other case is my mother's family. My mother's parents have two daughters and five sons. When my mom and her brothers were children, they wanted to go to middle school, but they couldn't, because her parents didn't have enough money to send their sons and daughters to middle school. After my mother graduated from elementary school, she worked at factory and made some money to send her younger brothers to school. These two cases show well phenomenons of Korea in 1950's to 1970's.
Elder women have gotten used to following elder men's opinions.They though they were lower than men because of education.
Nowadays, women are not used to agreeing men's opinion anymore when men suggest wrong advice and opinions. Women have studied at the same elementary, middle and high school, even the same university. They know what is right and what is wrong, so women will be more getting used to complaining to men.
There used to be different social rules in 1960 to 1980. Men didn't have to raise their hairs long, because it was illegal. Some policemen had been carrying scissors at all times in order to control men's hairs. When they found out some men who had long hairs, they arrested them and cut their long hairs immediately.
Women didn't have to short skirts, because it was illegal. When policeman found out girls who wore short skirts, they arrested them and sent them to prison in police office. Could you imagine in the police office?
There were some love stories between some men who had long hairs and women who wore short skirts. They met each other into the prison in police office.
However, Now men are used to having long hairs and women are used to wearing short skirts.
In the future, maybe men will be used to wearing skirts.
At Prehistoric times, the man used to use several sticks to make a fire. He used to produce his food by himself. He used to kill some animals. He used to eat just meat.
I image the people didn't use to get married. I image the people didn't use to speak English and they didn't use to smoke. I image the people didn't use to work to make money. There didn't use to be a house and the people would live in a cave. There didn't use to be a car and the people never travel. There didn't use to be a gouvernment and the people would never respect rules.
Nowdays the people are getting used to:
use fireplase to warm up;
eat many kinds of food, no just meat;
buy some food at the grocery stores;
get married;
work to make money;
speak many languages;
travel by car, by train, by airplane and by bus;
smoke every day
A long time ago in Korea, People didn't used to use a digital camera, cell phone, computer,Ipod...etc like high technologic machines. But they had been getting used to being satisfied without high technologic machines before it was made.
Many women didn't used to learn, they didn't used to read many books, they didn't used to know more than men, and they didn't used to meet meet men alone.
Now most people are used to using high technologic machines, and people are getting used to buy new
products.They want new things.
Women are used to meet men, they are getting used to know more than men,and they are becoming used to learn a lot.
A long time ago, the living way was limited, compared with nowadays.
Many women used to get married to man introduced by their family. They used to stay their home to do housekeeping as a work, getting married, having children, feeding and taking care of them, cleaning, doing lundry, that's their life.
I hope that there weren't any social rules about it, however, I'm sure that it was related to the custom inherited from forefathers on being their life.
In the 60s or 70s, gradually, women could get a job outside though they still were discriminated between opportunities.Their job would be to surpport men, for example, copy some documents, prepare some cups of coffee or tea called office lady, or I think that most women worked at factries sewing clothes, processing food, and so on.
Nowadays, women are getting used to have equal oppotunities to men.
I watched that some women became a fire fighter on TV when I was in Japan.It had to be unthinkable in the past.The otherside of the spectrum, men can work as a nurse now if they want to.Working style has changed in the last 50 years. I supporse that it's great progress for both men and women because working is an important part in the life, accordingly, choosing a job that they want helps them to live a full life.
20 or 30 years ago, there didn't used to be the world wide web for everybody. It was the beginning of the computer age for private households. The first computers used to be very expensive and not very useful for private persons, and a lot of people would never buy them. Nowadays it's different.
Computers are cheap, affordable and versatile for everybody. Now, people are used to spending a lot of time in front of the computer. Today it's possible to travel around the world without moving the body and leaving the room, the magic word is INTERNET. Instead of stressfully traveling by car, by train, by plain or by bus, please sit down make yourself compfortable and surf on the internet through the world.
However, don't forget the real world is outside, you will be getting fat and getting health proplems if you forget to move your body. For that reason I am used to going to the YMCA nowadays.
