"1984"

Hello All,

You've been reading "1984", and I would like to know what you think of Winston and Julia's romance. What makes it strange or beautiful or ugly to you? How is their relationship 'a political act', as Orwell describes it?

I look forward to your comments.

Bye for now,

Carol

The Winston and Julia's romance is absolutely not beautiful to me. On the one hand it's pity that they didn't have any chance to have a really nice romance, at what it is less important to have coffee and sugar than to be free in your thoughts and acts. The other side of the spectrum is that they probably belonged to the few number of people in Oceania who still didn't loose the ability to love despite the fear of the Thought Police and could still experience the true love for a short time bevor they were brocken by this Police. Sure it was a "political act" to love each other, to have sex and find a pleasure in it, to enjoy it, even though you could pay for it with your life.

I like this book talk aboute Politic, Sex, Philosophy etc. However it is hard to get inspiration aboute this topic. And it is little hard explain aboute romance and politic, because there are not to become one. politician has never care aboute love. They just want to get a high position and money.
Anyway I think this romance it is so strange to me. The story would began at the ministry of truth, when he saw the girl with dark hair again and he felt a strange mix of emotion. They didn't know each other, but he want to get a friend or relationship with her. She members of inner party and thought police. They met each other occosonaly, even though she knew while Winston had been married, but she doesn't care. They had a good realionship, this is crazy in love and ther are making love juust have fun such as sex together, had beaten the party. Love is blind and it is also dangerouse because love can be punished by death.
Orwell jjust want to make life in this story and also people would forget aboute politic for the moment.

It was so hard to me to imagine about 1984's sistuation.I really couldn't understand......It was more difficult than Jane Eyre to understand.
Anyway, Winson and Julia's romance was strange for me. I couldn't understand their love well. They didn't have a situation or time that they could love enough. They had a good relationship. but when they met first under the tree(right?), she said she felt him like same thing that was against big brother. That then time I felt that she wanted to find a person like her. When they met in the room, They talked about an inconsistent society and doubtful things about big brother. Julia stole some coffee, sugar, chocolate...etc. They ate together.....That behavior is 'a politica act' against big brother. I thought that their love was like a refuge from their real situation or a kind of a resistance about their society.

The Winston and Julia's first date was very danger, but their second date was very romantic. Because Julia had had make-up, tried to make something different before they storted their date.

When O'Brien's hand touched a lever on the machine and a wave of pain passed through Winston's body again and again. And he wanted to tried to make Winstion mad. I was feeling very sad and uncomfortable. Also, the end of 1984 was strange for me. I couldn't understand how does Winston can stay outside from Room 101. Because he didn't want to feel a pain from a machine again and he didn't want the rat eat his face?

Their relationship was very complex things. Because the Big Brother and Ministry of Love was hate each other. And Ministry of Love wanted to have a power to control people. But they have same thing is they used the telescreen to change people's thought.

Today it is hard to imagine that a world situation like G. Orwell has described, could happen. However, in the time G. Orwell had written the story people were less free in their thoughts and their behaviour, and wars and hate between different countries were a part of daily life. Extraordinary circumstances cause unusual acts, so a romance like G. Orwell’s in 1984 appears strange.
A world where a love romance between two people is a “political act” with the shown punishment is so terrible that it makes no sense to live in. The romance between Winston and Julia seems like a small strange island surrounded by the cold and dangerous ocean, without a chance to survive a storm. Obviously G. Orwell had exaggerated with his outlook in the future to show us what could happen if people get power-crazed.
